Our history

Gatis Community Space stands on the grounds of the old Courtalds factory in Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton. After the factory was demolished in the early 70’s the site became a council run Adventure Playground for many years.

In 2013 Maria, on of our now directors, began to set up a community garden at the playground, encouraging young people to develop an interest in growing and healthy eating. Unfortunately, in 2014 the Adventure Playground became a victim of cuts and was closed down.
Maria was determined to save this valuable community assett, and along with a few other members of the local community, began working with the Council to achieve this. In 2015 Gatis Community Space was born.

Over the next few years, with lots of work from local volunteers, the site was transformed and now boasts a well maintained community garden with accessible raised beds, childrens play area and water play, a firepit & outdoor kitchen, a ‘wilderness’ area with an out door classroom and mud kitchen. Inside the building is a small cafe and a large hall which is used for events, activities  and workshops and is also hired out as a function room.
